# Social previews

When a link is pasted into a chat or a post, the platform shows a card with a title, a description and an image. The **Open Graph** tab of a link decides what that card says.

## What happens without any settings

If you leave the tab untouched, the short link redirects straight to the destination and the platform ends up showing the destination's own card. That is usually what you want, and it needs no work.

You only need this tab when the destination has no usable card, or when the same page should be presented differently per campaign.

## Filling the fields

When you enter a destination URL, Zulink reads the page's existing Open Graph data and shows it as a starting point, together with previews of how the card will look on LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp, Discord and Slack. If the destination has nothing to read, the preview stays empty and you fill the fields yourself.

- **Title**, up to 120 characters.
- **Description**, up to 200 characters.
- **Image**, either a template or your own file.

Every field you leave empty falls back to what the destination page provides. Setting only a title is perfectly fine.

## The image

Two sources are offered:

**Templates** are the designs from the [OpenGraph Designer](https://docs.zulink.co/design-and-analytics/opengraph-designer). Picking one renders an image for this specific link when you save, and renders it again whenever the link or the design changes. A design that pulls in the title and description fills itself from this link's fields, which is how you get consistent, on-brand cards without touching an image editor per link.

**Custom** uploads one image for this one link. It is optimized in your browser before it is sent, and may be at most 3 MB. Uploaded and generated images count against your plan's preview image storage; when that is full, the upload is refused and older links keep their images.

## How the preview reaches the platform

As soon as a link has a title, a description or an image of its own, the short URL itself carries those tags. Platforms and crawlers that fetch the link read them there, while people who click are forwarded to the destination as usual, half a second later than with a plain link. That half second is the price of having your own card.

Two details follow from that:

- The card is attached to the short link, so different short links to the same page can advertise it differently.
- Links you excluded from search indexing, and links behind a password, are never offered to search engines even though the tags exist.

## Availability

Custom social previews are available from the Pro plan upwards, as is the OpenGraph Designer. Preview image storage per project is listed under [Plans and limits](https://docs.zulink.co/team-and-plans/plans-and-limits).
