# Creating links

A short link is a path under one of your verified domains that points at a destination URL. Everything else is optional and sits behind the tabs of the same dialog: campaign parameters, targeting, tests, previews, protection.

Open **Links** and choose **Add link**, or **Edit** in the action menu of an existing row.

## General

**Domain.** Only verified domains appear here. If the list is empty, connect one first: [Custom domains](https://docs.zulink.co/getting-started/custom-domains).

**Short link.** The path under the domain. Lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, up to 64 characters. A handful of words are reserved because they collide with product routes: `api`, `auth`, `admin`, `app`, `www`, `settings`, `links` and `domains`. **Randomize** generates a free five-character path. While you type, Zulink checks the path against the chosen domain and shows *Available* or *Already in use*. The same path can exist once per domain, so `go.example.com/spring` and `links.example.com/spring` are two different links.

Leaving the path empty turns the domain root itself into a link. That is a Pro feature.

**Destination URL.** The address visitors end up at. It has to be an `http://` or `https://` URL.

**Tags.** Project-wide labels, created as you type them. A link can carry up to 20, and the link list can be filtered by them.

**Expiration.** An optional moment after which the link stops working. Past it, visitors get a not-found page instead of the redirect. Clear the field to make the link permanent again.

**Notes.** A short internal remark, up to 120 characters. It is never shown to visitors.

## UTM parameters

The UTM tab holds source, medium, campaign, term, content and referral. Whatever you enter is appended to the destination on every single redirect, so you do not have to bake campaign parameters into the destination URL itself and can change them later without reprinting the link.

Query parameters a visitor brings along are carried over to the destination as well, and your UTM values are applied on top of them.

UTM parameters are available from the Pro plan upwards.

## The other tabs

| Tab | What it covers | Read more |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Open Graph | Title, description and image shown when the link is shared | [Social previews](https://docs.zulink.co/links/social-previews) |
| Targeting | Country and operating system rules | [Targeting](https://docs.zulink.co/links/targeting) |
| A/B Testing | Traffic split across variants | [A/B testing](https://docs.zulink.co/links/a-b-testing) |
| Security | Password protection | [Link security](https://docs.zulink.co/links/link-security) |
| Advanced | Cloaking and search engine indexing | [Link security](https://docs.zulink.co/links/link-security) |

A tab your plan does not include is locked and shows what it would take to unlock it. Settings you configured on a higher plan are kept, they simply stop being editable.

## Finding links again

The link list searches across your links and filters them by domain, tags, expiry, password, Open Graph, UTM, targeting, A/B test, cloaking and indexing. Each row shows the short URL, the destination, its tags, small badges for the settings that are active, the total click count and a fifteen-day trend.

The action menu of a row copies the finished short URL, opens the editor, or removes the link.

## Editing and removing

Editing a link takes effect immediately, including a changed destination. The short URL that is already in circulation keeps working and simply points somewhere else. Changing the path is the one exception: the old path is free again afterwards and everything already shared under it breaks.

Removing a link is permanent. The short URL stops resolving right away.
